Open Farm Day ~ Truelove Farms

Situated on 110 acres in the beautiful Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, Truelove Farms, owned by Tom Truelove, celebrated "Open Farm Day". The day started out with threats of rain but held back so it was a great time had by all. Black Rock BBQ Caterers prepared Smoked Meatloaf sandwiches and Sausage with peppers and onions, all meat from the farm.

Open Farm Day meant we were able to meet the animals on the farm. Our first stop was the puppies. They are the children of Rameses.

The puppies are so beautiful. They are very big and live up to their name: Great Pyrenees. The children were playing so much with the puppies, some of the pups fell asleep. Rameses was in separate area from the puppies. He was with Junior, a calf and the goat Greta, aka The Unicorn. They affectionately call her that because one of her horns broke off.

We ran into a couple of beautiful Roosters that were just standing there waiting to have their picture taken. They were quiet until after the photo shoot. I am guessing they liked the attention.

In the field, we saw a pig. He was by himself. We went to meet him. His name is Petey. He loves having his belly, ears, shoulders...he just loves to get rubbed. I was able to get in his fenced area with him and give him a rub down. We hit it off so well.

We eventually made our way to take a hayride. We were taken around to see where everyone was kept and explained how the animals are rotated from field to field. Very much along the way Joel Salatin at Polyface Farms does it. We saw mama pigs, papa pigs, baby pigs, cattle and then the girls. They have over 300 laying chickens!!

As we headed back to the barn, we stopped to see Petey again. We helped get him to a new location because Petey decided he did not want to stay where he was.

At that point, we had opportunity to chat with Tom Truelove. It was a delight to talk with him and learn how committed he is to his vision of providing high quality pastured beef, pork and chicken to the local community. He truly is a pioneer here in the Northeast.
